Optometry Services Offered for Residents of Farmville

Our optometrists not only provide exams for both eyeglasses and contact lenses to enhance vision but are trained to identify and treat the signs of many eye diseases and disorders. Some eye conditions can produce permanent damage long before you might be aware of their presence. That’s why regular eye examinations are crucial.

Common Eye Diseases and Their Symptoms

While some eye issues such as “pink eye” may come and go in a couple of weeks with no lasting damage, other diseases are chronic and irreversible in the destruction they cause to the eye. Common examples include:

  • Cataracts - A progressive clouding of the lens on the inside of the eye that causes loss of vision, poor vision at night, glare and halos around lights, and occasionally double vision.
  • Glaucoma - Damage to the optic nerve, usually due to poor fluid drainage and high fluid pressure inside the eye that causes peripheral vision loss followed by central vision loss.
  • Macular Degeneration - An age-related degeneration of the part of the retina that is responsible for producing your central or “straight-ahead” vision leading to blurry vision that escalates to vision loss over time.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy - Blood vessel damage from diabetes causes leakage and other abnormalities that can lead to retinal swelling and vision loss.
  • Dry Eye - When tears fail to provide the proper hydration and protection to the eye causing blurred vision, irritation, and possible corneal damage.
  • Keratoconus – Bulging of the cornea outward from the eye causing blurred vision and light sensitivity.

Eye Disease Screening, Diagnosis, and Management for Those Living in Farmville

Techniques such as slit lamp examination allow us to check the lens and cornea for signs of cataracts, or dry eyes. Retinal examinations let us look deep inside the eye to check the health of your retina, optic nerves, macula, and retinal blood vessels.

At Carolina Vision Care, we recommend medications to manage glaucoma, injections or lifestyle changes to minimize macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, corrective lenses to help you cope with cataracts (and co-management of any eventual surgery), and a variety of dry eye therapies.
