Our Optometrist in Greenville Explains the Symptoms of Blepharitis

Blepharitis occurs when eyelids are irritated, itchy, and covered with scales similar to dandruff flakes.  It is an eyelid condition caused by bacteria, rosacea, or inadequate eyelid hygeine Blepharitis may impair your vision by producing a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Dry eyes
  • Crusty, matted eyes
  • Swelling of the eyelids
  • Sensation of having grit embedded in the eye
  • Excessive tearing due

If not treated, blepharitis may promote loss of eyelashes, redness of the eyelids/eyes, and irritation.

Types of Blepharitis

Following examination of your eyes and eyelids, your eye doctor may diagnose your blepharitis as one of the following:

  • Seborrheic blepharitis-symptoms include greasy scales or flakes at the base of your eyelashes accompanied by redness of your eyelids.
  • Staphylococcal blepharitis-with this type of blepharitis, your eyelids may thicken and stick together. Misdirected eyelashes and significant loss of eyelashes occurs with staph blepharitis as well.
  • Ulcerative blepharitis-more serious than staph or seborrheic blepharitis, ulcerative blepharitis leaves sores on your eyelids when you remove the hard, matted crusts developing around your eyelashes. Chronic tearing and significant eyelash loss are other symptoms of ulcerative blepharitis.

BlephEx™ for BlepharitisTreatment

BlephEx™ works by utilizing a patented hand piece that carefully spins a tiny, medical grade sponge along the edges of your eyelids where the eyelashes meet your eyelids. This micro-sponge effectively removes debris and scurf produced by blepharitis as it gently exfoliates your eyelids.

Prior to beginning a BlephEx™ treatment, a numbing drop will be placed in each eye to increase comfort.  After completing the six to eight-minute treatment, the eyelids will then be rinsed thoroughly Patients undergoing BlephEx™ will be given instructions regarding maintenance of clean eyelids at home.

Benefits of BlephEx™

“I have seen excellent results in patient’s with previously constant eye irritation, and now, following the BlephEx procedure are symptom-free.” - Dr. Scott McIntosh

Complete removal of the irritating bacteria and their toxins produced by blepharitis eliminates the cause of the inflammation and leads to healthier eyelids and a natural increase in tear production. In fact, people with dry eye syndrome who are treated with BlephEx™ often discover they can stop using over the counter artificial tears, or lessen the amount they currently use.

Your eye doctor may recommend you repeat BlephEx™ treatments every few weeks if your blepharitis was particularly severe and accompanied by dry eye symptoms and/or eyelid ulcers.
