Is LASIK Surgery Right for You?

LASIK is a surgical procedure used to correct vision problems normally corrected by prescription eyewear and contacts. To find out if LASIK is right for you, talk to an eye care specialist at Carolina Vision Care in Greenville.

After a comprehensive evaluation of your eye health, visual acuity, and a review of your medical history, we can determine if LASIK surgery would be a good choice for you. Here are some important factors to consider when interested in LASIK surgery:

Age and Prescription Stability

LASIK candidates must be at least 18 years of age or older to qualify for surgery; however, between the ages of 18 and early-mid 20’s, your vision may still be changing which will affect the results of LASIK. Similarly, patients with eye conditions such as cataracts may not get the best results from LASIK, making them poor candidates for this procedure.

You’ll need to have a stable prescription for at least a year before scheduling a LASIK procedure in order to get long term results from the surgery.

Eye Health

Good eye health is another qualification for LASIK. If you have an eye condition such as glaucoma, keratoconus, or a retinal or optic nerve disease, you are not a good candidate for this procedure. LASIK surgery can even aggravate symptoms of some eye conditions such as dry eye.

Overall Health

Some health conditions and medications can affect how your eyes heal after surgery. If you have a medical condition like diabetes or an autoimmune disease and are taking prescription medications, you may not qualify for LASIK surgery.

Risks and Side Effects

LASIK, like any surgery, has potential risks and complications that should be carefully considered. Some people experience side effects after surgery that disappear with time. These side effects may include hazy or blurred vision, difficulty seeing at nighttime, scratchiness or dryness of the eyes, glare, halos or starbursts around lights, sensitivity to light, pain or discomfort, and bleeding of the white portion of the eye. In a small minority of patients, some of these side effects may be permanent.

From when I walked in the staff was cheerful and happy. I had a lady take me back for the pre-exam part and she was such a sweetheart ! Then the eye doctors daughter who is also the contact lady was sooo nice and made me feel at home! Amazing, amazing place!"
