What is Pink Eye?

“Pink eye” is the common term for what is medically known as conjunctivitis - an irritation of the delicate tissue that surrounds the eye. It is typically caused by bacteria or viruses, and is extremely contagious. This condition thrives in schools, where the combination of crowding and developing immune systems make for a perfect breeding ground. From there, it easily spreads to students' homes and hitches rides to work with parents.

Symptoms of Pink Eye

All forms of “pink eye” have literal pinkness or redness of the eye as a hallmark sign. Other symptoms depend on whether a virus or bacteria is at fault.

For “pink eye” caused by a virus, you may experience watery discharge from the eyes, puffy eyelids, and an accompanying cold or upper respiratory infection.

“Pink eye” caused by bacteria is more obvious thanks to its thick yellow or green discharge. This discharge is often the most obvious upon waking since it will have had hours to build up as you slept.

When Should You Go to the Eye Doctor?

You should call your eye doctor if you experience any of the symptoms below or changes in your vision:

·Redness

·Eye pain

·Sensitivity to light

·Discharge or crusting

·Excessive tearing

·Itching

Your eye doctor will perform an examination to determine if you have “pink eye” or another type of eye infection.

How Do I Avoid Spreading Pink Eye?

It’s possible to reduce your risk of spreading “pink eye” to others by washing hands frequently and avoiding touching the eyes. It is important to avoid sharing hand towels and linens such as pillowcases. Public places such as work and school should be avoided until the eye doctor says it is possible to return.
