Women's Eye Health and Safety Month
April is Women's Eye Health and Safety Month, and at Carolina Vision Care, we want every woman you care about to have healthy vision throughout all stages of her life. It's why we encourage local women to consult with a Greenville eye doctor regularly, to ensure that their eye health is properly looked after.
Women and Eye Health--Did you Know?
- It's been estimated that up to 2/3 of vision loss occurs in women.
- Because women tend to live longer than men, they are more likely to develop eye diseases such as cataracts (clouding of the lens), glaucoma (damage to optic nerve fibers), and age related macular degeneration (loss of central vision).
- Certain eye health problems, including chronic dry eye and and autoimmune diseases which affect vision, are also inherently more prevalent among women.
I'm a woman. How can I protect my eye health?
Not all eye diseases can be cured once they develop. Fortunately, most vision problems are treatable, and can even be prevented--or at least minimized in severity--by making a few small but important lifestyle changes. If you're a woman, the best way to protect your vision health is to:
- Quit smoking, if you're a smoker. Smoking is the number one preventable cause of eye disease among women.
- Protect your eyes in the sun. Chronic exposure to UV light can damage the light-sensitive tissues in your eyes. Wear protective UV sunglasses when you go outside, and consider wearing SPF-moisturizer on the delicate skin around your eyes.
- Commit to getting a regular eye exam. Unfortunately, many vision problems aren't detected until they have reached the later, more advanced stages of the disease progression. Additionally, the presence of an eye disease can often alert your doctor to other health problems that may be present but as yet undetected, such as an autoimmune disorder.
